Body image, Beauty and Bullying

Body image, Beauty and Bullying

If beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, why do so many young people feel ugly?

In a world where the overriding message received from popular culture is that what you look like counts, young people can feel lost, overlooked and lack self-confidence. These media idealised body norms can be reinforced by peers, family and community, increasing vulnerability to weight-based teasing and bullying.

This brand new workshop aims to challenge this by promoting a shift away from using body shape and size as a source of self-esteem and increasing opportunities for self-affirmation. Practitioners will try out a range of activities to explore notions of attractiveness, identify where body ideals originate and how stereotypes can lead to bullying, both as a target and perpetrator, and alternative ways to increase self-esteem.
