About Vanessa Rogers

Based in Hertfordshire, England, Vanessa worked briefly as a teacher, before qualifying as a youth worker at Leicester's De Montfort University, achieving a Master's Degree in Community Education.

Prior to becoming a successful consultant, author and trainer in youth work and PSHE, she managed children's services for Hertfordshire County Council. She is currently a leading author in her field, with practical resource books published worldwide by The National Youth Agency (UK) and Jessica Kingsley Publishers (UK, Ireland, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Israel, Poland, France, Czech Republic, China & Germany).

Alongside this she is a regular features writer for Children and Young People Now, an Associate Trainer for UK Youth, and was commissioned by the BBC to create teaching and learning packs for two of their major BBC3 series The Baby Borrowers and Underage and Pregnant.

"I am passionate about youth work and the unique relationships that youth workers build, particularly with young people considered hard to reach or 'at risk'. I continue to work with young people both in schools through PSHE and as a youth worker on the streets and in youth centres. After all, how can I train others if my own practice is out of date?"

Vanessa’s distinctive resource books provide an invaluable toolkit for creative social education, exploring a wide range of issues from community participation and politics to drug awareness and life skills. Easy to use and supported by clearly stated aims and learning outcomes, her books support effective, age appropriate PSHE and SRE.

Asked what inspires her to write, she explains: "Through my own work I discovered lots of books that told me the theory of youth work, but very few with practical suggestions about how to do it. I realised then that practitioners appreciate good ideas for creative activities that will engage, interest and inform young people. In addition all of the lesson plans in my books have been tried, tested and evaluated by young people, so they can be facilitated with confidence."

Vanessa’s much acclaimed training responds to current youth issues. Organisations can choose from a wide range of off-the-shelf training packages and INSET workshops or commission on a bespoke basis. She has further extended her reach with the commissioning of writing services specifically for children and young peoples services. This has included peer education training, presentation and skills for the workplace, plus education packs for both professionals and young people. Award winning examples of this include an anti-bullying resource for Essex County Council, ‘The Last Laugh’, 'The Go Girls Toolkit' a resource pack for empowering young women in Wales and ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ a resource to explore the practices of the tobacco industry for Smoke Free North West.
